What Improves Your Computer Speed? (Answered)

computer speed

You notice your computer is faster or slower than your friend or you are used to a faster computer and then one day work with a computer that is slow or you are on a research to find what makes a computer fast. we are going to explain and discuss what makes a computer fast and how to make your computer even faster.

Speed these days is what people are after. People need a faster internet connection, fast way to reach a destination and some many ways we need speed, coming to our computers I am also a victim because I hate it when my computer is slow, sometimes I want to see my command being processed before I finish telling the computer what to do (LOL just kidding). Before I start talking too much let me get you straight to today’s discussion.

What makes a computer fast?

There are many factors that make a computer fast which we shall be discussing but before then the processor is something we cannot do without talking about when it comes to this topic. When the computer was first invented the processing speed was about 740 kHz which is enough to process about 92,000 instructions per second.

In today’s time if your processor is 740 kHz then it will be seen as “too slow” because we have processors that can process 100 billion instructions per second. The speed of computers has seen a huge increment over time.

The processor is the number key thing to look out for when talking about the speed of your computer and below is the full list of what makes your computer fast.

  2. RAM
  3. CACHE

As you can see there are 7 factors that make your computer fast. We shall be discussing each of the factors separately for better understanding.

The Processor (CPU)

The processor or central processing unit (CPU) which is referred to by many people as the brain of the computer because of its ability to interact with another component of the computer and programs installed is a great option that helps determine the speed of your computer.

The processor is divided into two parts which are the logic unit and arithmetic unit; it is made up of small chips which are suited to the main board of the computer. The processor speed is measured in GHz/second and is also known as the clock speed. This means a processor with 2.7 GHz per second can execute up to 2.7 billion instructions per second and a processor with 3.1 GHz will execute 3.1 billion instructions per second.

Although in some instances the higher your GHz speed does not necessarily mean that your computer will be fast for example if your computer with a processor of intel core i5 at 2.7 GHz it will execute more instructions than someone with a processor of intel core i3 at 3.1 GHz. The reason is that the processor core i5 is stronger than core i3 since core i5 has more transistors, cores and many features that are lacking in the Core i3, basically in the processor level, the higher the core the faster computer.

The RAM which is a short form for Radom Access Memory is one of the common things people talk about when comparing the speed of their computers. The RAM is the computer short term data storage that stores the information your computer is actively using and also allows the computer to access the information quickly.

To further explain how the RAM works take you as an example using multitasking because humans multitask on a daily basis. When you are eating and watching television or you could be walking and making a call. You can be doing many things at the same time (multi-tasking). When you stop reading to answer a call when you are done answering the call and back to your reading, you don’t start from the beginning instead continue from where you stop because the storyline is still in your memory. That is a similar way the RAM works

The more your RAM the more instruction your computer execute simultaneously, the processor processes the cycle based on its quality while the RAM does that base on the quantity. The programs you open on your computer have an effect on the speed of your computer as they occupy space in the RAM. Closing all games, editors, video players and music players that are not in use help to boost your computer speed and another point to note is that “the more your computer RAM the faster your computer”. A computer with 4 GB RAM is faster than a computer with 2 GB RAM.

The Cache

The cache is the fastest computer memory. It is faster than the RAM and hard drive. The cache picks data from the RAM and sends it to the CPU or processor. Your processor is faster than your RAM and cannot wait for your RAM to give it data because of its slow nature so it depends on the cache to provide data for it since is it fast and can work with RAM.

The more cache your computer has the faster it will operate because the cache also saves some data for future use, it doesn’t have to start looking for a particular data when needed by the processor it keeps all the vital data needed by the processor to perform a task to help the processor execute more instructions.

The bus speed

The bus speed is measured in megahertz and it is the circuit responsible for connecting the various component of the motherboard. As you see above where information needs to travel from RAM and hard drive to the processor, the bus is responsible for that movement and sending the information from the RAM and hard drive to the processor.

The faster the information can travel from the RAM and hard drive to the processor the better because it allows the processor has access to enough data that can be executed on time without wasting time.

The Hard drive

The hard drive is one of the factors to consider when talking about the speed of a computer although there are two types of the hard drive which are the HDD (Hard disk drive) and the SSD (solid-state drives). They are both hard drives and have their advantages and disadvantages.

The HDD hard drives are designed in such a way they have moving parts in them which sometimes leads to slower read and write while the SSD uses flash memory with moving parts which makes reading and writing faster than the HDD drives.

Your hard drives also determine the speed of your computer in terms of its space. The higher the space the faster it will read and write instructions.

The video card

The video card which is also known as the GPU which stands for Graphics Processing Unit is another factor to put into consideration when talking about what makes a computer fast. It is made up of an electronic circuit add-on that alters and manipulates the computer memory to create images quicker for monitor display. This function is very vital to computer gamers because most of them go the extra mile to buy an additional video card for their computer.

The video card also make use of your computer RAM, adding an extra video card to your computer will reduce the workload on your processor and to make gaming more seamless you need a fast GPU or video card since games display so many images and pictures at once.

Operating system

Windows, macOS and Linux are all examples of operating systems and the type of operating system you are using has an effect on the speed of your computer because it acts as an intermediate between your software and hardware. It connects and makes your computer software and hardware work together without conflict. In other to ensure the maximum speed from this factor always make sure you are using the latest version of your operating system.

What makes a laptop faster, is the RAM?

The laptop is a personal computer that can be carried from one place to another and when we are talking about what makes a laptop fast plenty of people will begin to mention RAM although on the other hand, some people will argue saying it is the processor.

Before I give you my answer I want you to know that both the RAM and the processor need each other to function. The RAM for example which stands for Random Access Memory holds temporal information and data needed by the CPU while the Processor, on the other hand, is the brain of the computer or the CPU. Its primary work is to instruct and process the information needed by the computer.

From the above explanation, you should already know the answer to what makes a laptop fast between the RAM and Processor. But to give my answer I will say both the RAM and Processor are what makes a computer fast because if your RAM is fast and your processor is not fast then your RAM has to be waiting for the processor to process the information given to it a time before feeding it with another and so also if your Processor is fast and your RAM is slow your processor will have to wait for your RAM to give it the information it needs.

They both have to work hand in hand in other to make your computer fast, so when talking about what makes a computer fast we should be talking about the RAM and processor and make sure they are both balanced.

How to make your computer faster

After knowing what makes a computer fast you will be wondering how to make your computer fast or how to increase the speed of your computer. Apart from increasing your computer RAM and Processor, there are some other things you can do to increase the speed of your computer which we shall be discussing now below.

  1. Update your OS (Operating System):- if you have been following this article from the beginning you will notice I mention your operating system as what makes your computer fast and operating system creators such as windows, macOS, Linux and the rest optimize every new version of OS they launch for speed, reduce glitches and to fix bugs, updating your operating system also goes a long way by keeping your applications and programs updated.
  2. Remove unwanted applications and programs:- uninstalling and deleting applications and programs you are not using again can increase the speed of your computer as some of such programs might be running on the background, therefore, using system resources but when they are been deleted they create more space for other applications to run smoothly, therefore, making your computer fast.
  3. Always scan your computer for viruses and malware:- a virus or malware can contribute to slowing your computer down. Scanning your computer for viruses and malware can help you deal with found threads that can cause harm to your computer.
  4. Disallow applications and programs from automatically starting up when the system is boot:- sometimes just after booting your computer you find out that some programs and applications automatically start running without you starting them, this act can slow your computer down, look for all the programs that do that and stop them from automatically starting.
  5. Free up memory:- make it a habit of keeping enough space on your computer as low storage space will slow your computer.
  6. You can periodically hard start your computer or restart it to fix some unnoticed bugs.

We hope our article was able to explain to you what makes your computer fast and how important your processor, RAM, cache, bus speed, hard drive, operating system and video card are in making your computer fast.
